One hundred years ago, S'Agaró was created in the heart of the Costa Brava. In 1924 the industrialist Josep Ensesa and the architect Rafael Masó began the construction of a garden city that combined architecture, landscape and tourism. S'Agaró embodied their noucentista ideals, and was synonymous with the civility and excellence they wanted for Catalonia. In a few years S'Agaró became a stage for the country's culture, politics and economy. The centennial exhibition of S'Agaró, which can be seen at Girona’s Casa de Cultura, explains the origins and history of the garden city, and who were the protagonists.

After its presentation at Palau Robert in Barcelona last summer, the S'Agaró centenary exhibition is expanded with an additional space at Casa Masó. Here you can see Masó's original drawings, sketches and plans, as a complement to the first areas of the exhibition that can be visited at the same time at the Casa de Cultura. These sections are dedicated to the beginnings of S'Agaró, the construction of the first villa and the planning of the nineteenth-century garden city, where Masó built twenty villas between 1924 and 1935, the year of his death. In addition to the chalets, you can also see Masó's original drawings and plans for the urbanisation's public spaces: stairs, squares and pergolas, as well as for the first Hostal de la Gavina.

Exhibition curated by Jordi Falgàs. Organized by the Fundació Rafael Masó, with support from the Diputació de Girona.
