By studying Rafael Masó's industrial architecture, we present an aspect of his work that until now has not received the attention it deserves. Although Masó was not a specialist in this type of buildings, he focused on industrial architecture throughout his entire professional career, from 1906 until shortly before his death in 1935. The interpretation of these buildings allows us to review some of his well-known and iconic works, such as the Teixidor flourmill, as well as to reveal some virtually unknown and previously unpublished projects. This collection of works provides a rich and diverse overview. On the one hand, it shows Masó's formal evolution from Noucentisme to the Modern Movement. On the other hand, we can also find out who his clients were, who were these industrialists who entrusted him with their factories and warehouses. Above all, it is a tour that tells us about the city of Girona at a time of transformation and growth, thanks to industrialization and the urban and social changes that stimulated the city's entry into the 20th century and modernity, passing through periods such as the Mancomunitat of Catalonia, the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and the Second Republic.
Exhibition curated by Jordi Falgàs, director of the Rafael Masó Foundation; and produced by the Rafael Masó Foundation, with support from the Girona Provincial Council. The Rafael Masó Foundation receives ongoing support from the Girona City Council, the Girona branch of the Architects’ Association of Catalonia, the Girona College of Technical Architecture, and the University of Girona.
