Girona organizes a triple tribute to painter Mercè Huerta on the tenth anniversary of her death

Tuesday, July 1, 2025

With the aim of remembering the painter and teacher, the Valvi Foundation, the Fita Foundation, and the Rafael Masó Foundation have jointly organized a program of exhibitions and activities.

Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the death of Mercè Huerta Busquets (Figueres, 1929 – Girona, 2015), various organizations and institutions in the city of Girona have prepared a series of events and exhibitions in homage to the artist of Casa Masó, with the purpose of remembering and celebrating her legacy as a painter and illustrator, as a teacher of several generations of artists, and as honorary president of the Rafael Masó Foundation, together with her husband, writer Narcís-Jordi Aragó. This multifaceted tribute will take place in different cultural centers and exhibition venues across the city during the second half of 2025, aiming to showcase the artist’s involvement in civic and cultural projects, as well as her influence and the presence of her legacy in the work of various contemporary artists.

The tribute will begin on Thursday, July 3 (6:30 p.m.), at the Centre Cultural La Mercè, where Huerta taught at the Municipal School of Art from 1985 to 1994. The event, titled “Girona to Mercè Huerta,” will feature the participation of the directors of the Rafael Masó and Valvi Foundations, Jordi Falgàs and Maguí Noguer, two institutions with which Mercè Huerta was closely associated. Also taking part will be the painter Anna Agustí Hontangas and, representing the Huerta and Aragó families, professor Rosa M. Medir Huerta and photographer Rafel Bosch Aragó.

On July 15 (7 p.m.), an exhibition of Mercè Huerta’s works will be inaugurated at the Fita Foundation headquarters, which will remain open to the public until the 31st. In addition to paintings and drawings, the exhibition will include various objects from the artist’s studio, such as her painting easels, and a large collection of photographs documenting her life and career will be projected. Huerta was a drawing and painting instructor at the Fita Art Studio from 1981 to 1986.

Finally, the Valvi Foundation has prepared a series of events for the autumn, starting with the opening, on October 7 (7 p.m.), of the exhibition “The Poetics of Forms,” featuring paintings by Mercè Huerta, which will be on display until January 10, 2026. At the opening event, historian and former mayor of Girona, Joaquim Nadal, will speak about the artist and her marriage to writer and journalist Narcís-Jordi Aragó. On October 9, there will be a guided tour of the exhibition and a conversation between painter Eva Llorens and Maguí Noguer, director of the Valvi Foundation. To mark this tribute, the three organizing foundations have published a leaflet featuring excerpts from texts by Mercè Huerta and reproductions of some of her works.
