It is one of the two halves of Casa Salieti (1918)
The Town Council of Torroella de Montgrí and L’Estartit has put up for auction a house designed by Rafael Masó in the village of L’Estartit in 1918. It is one of the two halves of Casa Salieti, which the children of the Girona businessman Joan Salieti commissioned from the architect as a summer residence. Since it was not meant to be a permanent home but rather a holiday villa, Masó conceived a building with simple features yet still representative of his mature Noucentista style. In accordance with the commission by Joan and Lluïsa Salieti Massaguer, Casa Salieti was conceived—and has always been—a building whose interior is divided down the middle, from north to south, and under the same roof shelters two single-family homes that were originally completely symmetrical, one on the eastern half and the other on the western half, with the façade facing the sea to the south. The half that has now been put up for auction is the western one, which once housed a popular restaurant, now closed.
Masó, as was his custom, made extensive use of glazed ceramics on the façade, the roof, and the interiors, especially the caramel-coloured and green pieces he designed himself. The house façade also features a magnificent sundial designed by Masó, bearing the inscription Year 1918 / The Dawn.
Over the past decades, the exterior and especially the original interiors of Casa Salieti have undergone considerable alterations, as has the environment around the house and the entire village. Even so, the current building still preserves the sober and majestic character that Masó gave it more than one hundred years ago.
For all those interested, the Town Council has scheduled a series of visits to the property during the months of November and December. More information at recaptacio@torroella-estartit.cat
