Girona City Council, Fundació Rafael Masó, and several local organizations join forces to honor the journalist and writer on the tenth anniversary of his death
Between October 2026 and March 2027, the city of Girona will host a series of events honoring Narcís-Jordi Aragó i Masó (Girona, 1932-2016), marking both the tenth anniversary of his death and the twentieth anniversary of the donation of Casa Masó to the city by Aragó and his wife, Mercè Huerta, in 2006. The program includes exhibitions, lectures, roundtable discussions, book presentations, guided tours, and audiovisual screenings, celebrating one of the most significant figures in Catalan journalism in the second half of the twentieth century and bringing his legacy to new audiences.
The initiative is a joint effort by Girona City Council, Girona Provincial Council, the College of Journalists of Catalonia - Girona Chapter, the Girona Chamber of Commerce, Fundació Fita, Fundació Valvi, the Girona Friends of UNESCO, and Fundació Rafael Masó, together with the Aragó family. The program was presented this morning by Girona mayor and president of Fundació Rafael Masó Lluc Salellas i Vilar; deputy mayor and city councillor for Culture Quim Ayats i Bartrina; second vice-president of Girona Provincial Council Gemma Geis i Carreras; and director of Fundació Rafael Masó Jordi Falgàs.
"Narcís-Jordi Aragó is one of the most significant figures in twentieth-century Girona, both for his career and commitment to the city and for the generosity, civic engagement, and intellectual legacy he has left us. His writings remain essential references for understanding Girona, its history, and its identity," said mayor Lluc Salellas i Vilar. He added that "through this tribute, our institutions fulfill their duty to preserve individual and collective memory and keep alive the values that define us as a city."
Quim Ayats i Bartrina emphasized the importance of bringing Aragó's work to younger generations: "The involvement of so many local organizations shows that preserving the memory of figures like Aragó is also a way of building Girona's cultural future."
Aragó enjoyed a prolific career in journalism, working in both radio and print media, and published numerous books. His writing explored literature, art, cultural heritage, and the life of the city and the country, making a significant contribution to cultural and civic debate. He also served as honorary president of Fundació Rafael Masó.
